NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team hit their stride offensively today in a dominant 114-28 victory over Dean College. The team shot a blistering 57.1% from the field with six different players finding themselves in double figures. It was a commanding display of skill and teamwork as the Bears cruised to the lopsided win.
The Coast Guard women's basketball team came out firing on all cylinders, opening the game with a scorching 17-1 run in just the first five minutes. Junior
Dorothy Stotts played a key role in the early surge, scoring eight points, including two three-pointers. Although the Bulldogs managed a brief response, the Bears maintained control, finishing the first quarter with a commanding 29-10 lead.
Coast Guard's dominance continued into the second quarter, where they outscored the Bulldogs 28-4. Junior
Mackenzie Hilden contributed five points in the final two minutes of the half, helping push the Bears to a 57-14 advantage at the break.
Remarkably, both teams matched their first-half scoring in the second, with the score once again ending 57-14 in favor of the Bears. The 114-point total set a new program record for Coast Guard, breaking the previous mark of 107 points in a single game.
The Bears' offensive depth was on full display, with 13 players getting on the scoreboard. Stotts led the team with 15 points, while senior
Glory Blethen added 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman
Elliot Geer dominated the glass, pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.
With the record-breaking victory, the Bears improve to 3-1 on the season. Next up is a road game against crosstown rival Connecticut College this Wednesday, with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
