TROY, N.Y. - The Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team played their first road game of the season tonight, but the outcome left much to be desired as the Bears were unable to come back late and lost 50-53 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Bears fall to 1-1, while RPI improves to 3-0.
Senior forward
Glory Blethen and junior guard
Taylor Lynch each put up double-doubles to lead the Bears. Blethen dropped 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games, while blocking three shots to inch closer to the Academy's all-time record. Lynch recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career with an 11-point, 10-board showing, along with two steals.
Overall, it was a tale of two halves for Coast Guard, who got off to a rough start shooting 12.19% on 41 shots from the field during the first two quarters. RPI, on the other hand, was spared the bad luck and shot 36.67% on 40 shots, entering halftime with a commanding 30-14 lead. The Engineers also took full advantage of their visitors' lack of care for the ball, scoring 12 points on turnovers in the half; ten of those points came in the first quarter.
Coast Guard fared much better coming out of halftime, outscoring the Engineers, 14-12, in the third quarter while limiting them to 15.58% on 13 shots over those ten minutes. The fourth quarter would see the Bears turn up the heat, going on a 12-2 run over the first seven minutes to cut RPI's lead to 46-40; unfortunately, Coast Guard was unable to surmount the deficit despite outscoring RPI 22-11 in the final period, shooting 56.25% on 16 shots while limiting the opposing team to 26.67% on 15 attempts.
Junior guard
Dorothy Stotts was the only other Bear to score more than five points, tallying 12 to go with three steals, while first-year guard
Ruby Miller led the rookies with five points in 18 minutes. RPI's leading scorer was guard
Tyler Hormazabal, who had ten.
Coast Guard will look to bounce back later this week on Friday, November 15, as they take on Geneva College at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first game for the Bears in this year's Gordon Classic, a yearly basketball showcase hosted by Gordon College. The match-up will be Coast Guard's first ever vs. the Golden Tornadoes.
