NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In a hard fought battle vs the rival Mariners, Coast Guard walked away with a 2-2 tie.
The tie moves the Mariners to 5-1-3 on the season, they will next face Skyline foe Mount St. Mary on the road on Saturday October 5th at 3:00 PM.
After a physical first half, the score between the two rivals was tied 1-1. Despite it being a tough, hard nosed, defensive half, each team had their share of opportunities. Coast Guard had seven shots, four on goal while King's Point had five shots, three on goal. The Bears were able to break through first. Their team leader in goals,
Tara Jessen(Signal Mountain, TN) notched her third goal of the season in the 15th minute to give CGA the early lead. Jessen was assisted on her goal by sophomore
Lulu Vlases(Boseman, MT). The Coast Guard women's soccer Rookie of the Year recipient from last season earned her first career assist on the play.
Just over 10 minutes later in the 26th minute, King's Point tied the score at 1-1. They were able to score on an offensive breakaway in which sophomore forward Alexx Forman(Cininnati, OH) was able to stay onside and bury the ball into the back of the net. Forman was led by a marvelous pass from fellow sophomore Ainsley Carlson(Gilbert, AZ).
For the final 19 minutes of the half, the team exchanged possessions but the defenses prevailed, with neither team able to score.
At nearly the identical time as they did in the first half(16th minute in the half, 56th in the game) the Bears took the lead yet again. This time on a perfect shot from the foot of freshman midfielder
Ella Pottle(Epping, NH). On a ball the Mariners were trying to clear out of the box, Pottle intercepted and fired the ball just out of the reach of the USMMA goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
Again mirroring the first half. King's point answered around 10 minutes later with a goal from Natalie Colpoys(Rochester, NY) in the 74th minute. The next 16 minutes went scoreless and the teams ended the evening with a tie.
The Bears, who move to 1-5-3 with the tie, will get back to NEWMAC play on the road vs Emerson College Saturday at 1:00 PM.
