NEW LONDON, Conn. –
The Coast Guard Academy Bears dropped their homecoming game vs Salve Regina 28-34. With the victory, the Seahawks moved to 4-2 on the season(3-0 NEWMAC). They will next face Springfield College next Saturday at home at 12:00 PM.
With 4th and long twice, the Bears appeared on the verge of stopping the Seahawks. On the first,
William Wolf(Front Royal, VA) had a monster sack on the third down to force the 4th and long. After a CGA pass interference on the first and long conversion on the second, Salve got 1st downs on both and scored shortly thereafter for a 14-0 quarter 1 lead.
In the 2nd, Coast Guard appeared to be mounting a comeback when
Chase Politte(Festus, MO) caught a TD pass from
Joey Armentrout(Oceanside, CA) to cut the deficit to 21-7. Unfortunately, the Seahawks picked off the Bears with 1 minute remaining in the half and scored on their very next play to take a 28-7 lead into the half.
In the 2nd half, Coast Guard came out on fire. The defense, led by
Blake Delevan(Carlisle, PA) and
Patrick McCaskey(Manasses Park, VA) who each had six tackles, did not allow a single point in the half. The offense found their stride as well, scoring three unanswered TDs, all of which coming on rushes from QB
Dennis O'Shea(Decatur, GA). The highlight of the half on offense was a spectacular, highlight reel catch from star wideout
Broock Desta(San Diego, CA) who went up with one hand to miraculously pull down a perfectly placed pass from
Joey Armentrout for a connection in the red zone.
The O'Shea TD with 2:32 seconds remaining in the game which cut the game to one possession was just barely too little too late, as the Bears defense was unable to prevent the Seahawks from getting two first downs to seal the game.
Bears QB
Joey Armentrout had 315 passing yards and a touchdown on the afternoon. His favorite target was sophomore wideout Matthew Labouliere(Doylestown, PA) who had nine receptions for 126 yards including numerous toe tapping sideline receptions to keep a Bears drive alive.
The 3-3 Bears(1-2 NEWMAC) will travel to Norwich University next weekend to face off with the Cadets at 12:00 PM.
