NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard men's soccer was unable to get on the board vs. Connecticut College on Tuesday night in a 0-3 loss to their neighbors from down the road. The loss puts Coast Guard's record at 9-3-1 (3-1 NEWMAC).
Neither team found the net for the entirety of the first half despite a combined 19 shots, the majority of which were attempted by the Camels (13). Only three of Conn College's shots were on target, but each one was saved by
John Putnam. The teams were nearly even in fouls over a physical opening 45 minutes, with Coast Guard being called for six and the Camels drawing five whistles.
The stalemate was broken not too long into the second half after a 50th minute goal for Conn College by
Marco Perugini, who was assisted by
Rye Jaron. The Camels extended their lead just a few minutes later after
Gavin Mpiana scored on a penalty kick. The score column was quiet until the 85th minute, when
Matt Scofone drove in the dagger with the Camels' thrid goal of the game; he was assisted by Mpiana.
Coast Guard was called for five fouls in the second half, three of which went for yellow cards. The Bears were also limited to five shots in the half and just one corner. Conn College finished the match with 28 shots in total. six of which were saved by Putnam.
Bears men's soccer will be on the road for their next match on Saturday, October 19th, in which they'll be facing Rhode Island College for a 3 p.m. kick-off. The Anchormen are 8-2-1 (4-1 LEC) and will have have UMass Dartmouth before their game against Coast Guard. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in their last meeting.
