NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team won in dominating fashion over MIT Tuesday night in Alumni gymnasium. This victory improves the Bears to 9-4 (2-2 NEWMAC). The loss drops MIT to 2-12 (1-4 NEWMAC). They will face Emerson College at home on Thursday January 11th.
The 100 point scoring barrage for the Bears marks the first time since January of 2020 that they have put up triple digits in a game. CGA shot season high from both the field(61.9%) and from three (53.6%). Scoring for the Bears was led by sophomore guard Mitch Shettles. Shettles shot an incredible 6/8 from beyond the arc and set season highs in points(22), three pointers made(6), and free throws made(4). He also added five rebounds and two assists. Junior guard Declan Rooney too set a season high in points with 21. Rooney was perfect from both beyond the arc(3/3) and the line(2/2).
Sophomore Luke Farrell led the Bears in steals(3), rebounds(9), and added three assists. Farrell's performance along with stellar performances from each man on the floor helped CGA to lead the Engineers in every major category. They held the advantage in steals(8-2), blocks(5-0), assists(20-11), rebounds(38-25), and 3pt%(.536/.368). The biggest discrepancy however, came from the line. MIT shot 55%(11/20) while CGA shot a season high 89%(16/18).
The Bears will set out to keep the momentum and stay hot when they travel to NEWMAC opponent Springfield College Thursday at 12:00pm.
