St. Mary's City, MD. - Men's Basketball came out of the winter break taking part in the St. Mary's Winter Classic, going 2-0 on the weekend after defeating Baruch and St. Mary's.
On Friday, Coast Guard took on Baruch, getting the nine point win with a final of 59-50.
The first half was a tight match-up as it started with both teams taking the lead several times. The Bears were ultimately trailing with just under nine minutes to go, but kept the score close.
Heading into the break, CGA was down, 22-18.
The second half is where Coast Guard found its rhythm. With around 16 minutes to go, the Bears took their first lead of the game since the 13:53 mark in the first half. There were three lead changes, with Baruch holding the majority of the lead, before Coast Guard jumped out in front again. With five and a half to go in the game, the Bears were up by two and held the lead all the way to the end.
Declan Rooney led the Bears in scoring with 13, followed by
Mitch Shettles with 11 and
Luke Farrell with 10. Farrell led all players with 13 rebounds.
Saturday afternoon, Coast Guard took on the host of the tournament, St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Bears took down the Seahawks with a final of 83-59 and gave CGA its fourth win in a row.
The Bears struggled to find the bottom of the basket for the first two and a half minutes while the Seahawks went on a seven point scoring run. At one point in the first half, CGA found themselves down by as much as 15. The Bears were able to chip away at the deficit before taking their first lead of the game off a three by
Elijah Parent that came with just over a minute to go before the half.
Heading into halftime, CGA was up by five with a score of 37-32.
Much like the previous day, the second half is where Coast Guard found its rhythm.
Jordan Frazer drained a three a minute in and from there, the Bears took off. They continued to build their lead, going up by as much as 26 before getting the 24-point win.
Parent led the Bears in scoring with 22 and had seven rebounds. Frazer recorded 21 points with four rebounds.
Coast Guard will be at home on January 3rd at 3 PM, hosting WPI in its second conference game of the season.
