NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Men's Swimming and Diving Team dropped a closely matched meet against rival Merchant Marine Academy on Senior Day. The meet was a back-and-forth contest with USMMA edging out the Bears 155-145.
The men wished fair winds and following seas to five seniors. The men's team captains: Derek Ledford and Bobby O'Donnell, were joined by Tyler Bland, Sam Chapman, and Ethan Di Egidio in the final home meet of their careers.
The men had a series of great individual days by several athletes. Leading the way in the freestyle events was sophomore All-American Colin Twiss, who won every event he competed in. Individually he won the 1000 free (10:02.06), 100 free in a blistering 46.55 and the 500 free shortly after the 100 in 4:51.23. He also anchored the winning 400 free relay in a 45.44. Joining Twiss as a multi event winner was NCAA breaststroke specialist Tyler Bland who won both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in 57.58 and 2:09.54 respectively. Sophomore Sean Lyman won both backstroke events with a 52.89 in the 100 yard distance and 1:56.50 in the 200. Bobby O'Donnell swam to the other individual event victory in the 200 freestyle in nearly a regular season best 1:44.59.
Closing the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay was the team of junior Jake Kim, O'Donnell, Derek Ledford, and the strong anchor leg of Colin Twiss.
The men's season record stands at 6-2, and they will be off until January 28, for their final dual meet of the season against Clark University.
