Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team battled with nationally ranked Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Nitchman Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bears and the Beavers went back and forth in the first half, trading shots on the opponent's goal, but neither keeper relinquished a score. At the break, it was a 0-0 contest, in what was a fast moving first half of game play.
After the restart, #10 Babson wasted little time. Their first goal of the game was scored just four minutes into the second period of play by sophomore Camryn Ward, assisted by classmate Jordyn Ferrantino. The Beavers would go on to add two more goals over the next twelve-plus minutes with scores from junior Natalie Knauf (unassisted) and graduate student Izzy Lynch, aided by first-year Meredity Greeley.
Stand-outs for the Bears included junior Chase Merrick, who put three shots on goal, while goal keeper, Emily Scharnitzky once again had a strong performance with five saves on eleven shots on goal.
Head Coach Susan Grant commended Babson for their strong performance, but also noted the wherewithal and fight of her own squad:
"Our team battled hard today against a tough Babson squad. We are proud of our ladies tenacity, possession, and not giving up. They were creating some good scoring chances right until the end. Babson took advantage of the opportunities given to them, but the score is not reflective of what our players brought to the field today."
With the win, Babson improves to 8-0-0 on the season. Coast Guard moves to 4-3-0. The Bears take the field next on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022 at 6pm EST for a non-conference contest against Trinity College (CT).
