Bears Sweep Wheaton

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Amanda Moore picked up both wins on the mound and Mariah Dewey had six hits including a homer and drove in four runs as Coast Guard swept Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader winning the opener 10-9 in 10 innings before a 7-2 win in the nightcap in the final home games of the season.

Coast Guard improves to 18-14 overall and now sits in a four-way tie for second place at 11-5 in conference play while Wheaton drops to 19-15 overall and 8-8 in the NEWMAC.

The Bears close out the regular season with a doubleheader at MIT on Saturday at noon. The NEWMAC tournament will begin on Wednesday at the top two seeds.

GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 10, WHEATON 9 (10 INNINGS)

Coast Guard scored twice in the bottom of the tenth to the back-and-forth opener.

Wheaton took a 9-8 in the top of the 10th on an RBI single by Juliette Zito.

The Bears tied it 9-9 when Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo walked with the bases loaded before Coast Guard won the game when Mariah Dewey scored when she beat the throw on a fielder's choice hit by Lillia Farlow for the walk-off win.

Dewey had four hits including a double, Yoshioka Montalvo had three hits including a double while Julia Breidental had two hits and drove in four.

Christine Carey and Isabelle Shroyer also had two hits in the game one win.

Amanda Moore (11-4) got the win in relief working the final three innings and allowing just one hit, an unearned run and striking out three.

Coast Guard scored four run in the second on an RBI double by Selena Serna, an RBI single by Dewey and a two-run single by Breidenthal.

The Lyons pulled even with four in the fourth.

Breidenthal had another two-run single in the fourth to give the Bears a 6-4 lead.

Wheaton scored three in the fifth and one more in the sixth for an 8-6 lead.

In the sixth, Katie Becker had an RBI single and Shroyer's sacrifice fly tied the game 8-8.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 7, WHEATON 2


Moore (12-4) went the distance and scattered five hits and allowed one earned run while walking one and fanning four to get the win.

Dewey had two hits including a homer and drove in three to lead the Coast Guard offense.

Wheaton scored both of its runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard took the lead for good with four in the third as Dewey hit a two-run homer to tied it. The Bears took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Yoshioka Montalvo before an RBI single by Farlow pushed the lead to 4-2.

The Bears added three more in the fourth on RBI singles by Becker and Dewey and an RBI fielder's choice by Yoshioka Montalvo for the 7-2 lead.
