Bears Run Win Streak to Five With Sweep of Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard exploded for nine runs in the final two innings of game two to erase a deficit and complete the sweep of host Mitchell as the Bears won the opener 8-5 and completed the sweep with an 11-3 win in six innings.

Coast Guard has won five straight to improve to 10-6 on the season while Mitchell drops to 10-12.

Isabelle Shroyer was 7 for 8 at the plate in the two games and she went the distance on the mound in game two for Coast Guard.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host UMass Dartmouth in a doubleheader at 3:00.

GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 8, MITCHELL 5

Julia Breidenthal was 3 for 4 and drove in four runs leading Coast Guard to the game one win.

Amanda Moore (6-2) went the distance and allowed eight hits and just two earned runs while walking three and fanning four to get the win.

Christine Carey and Shroyer each had three hits for the Bears as Coast Guard finished with 13 hits in the win.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Shroyer and a two-run single by Breidenthal.

Mitchell got one in the third before the Bears scored three times in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Mariah Dewey and a two-run single by Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo for a 6-1 lead.

Breidenthal blasted her second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left in the seventh as the Bears extended the lead to 8-2.

Mitchell added three in the seventh to close the scoring.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 11, MITCHELL 3 (6 INNINGS)

Shoyer was 4 for 4, drove in four runs and pitched complete game leading the Bears to the game two win.

She went the six innings and scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run while walking one and fanning five to get the win and improve to 4-4 on the season.

Mitchell led 3-2 after four innings before the Bears scored four in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Carey, Dewey and Lillia Farlow all had three hits. Farlow drove in three runs while Carey and Dewey each had two doubles and scored three times for the Bears.

Yoshioka Montalvo and Breidenthal added two hits each in the nightcap as Coast Guard finished with 17 hits in the win.

The Bears took the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Shroyer and added two more on a two-run double by Farlow for a 6-3 lead.

In the sixth, Carey and Dewey had RBI doubles before Breidenthal's RBI single pushed the lead to 9-3.

Farlow added an RBI ground out before the final run scored on a throwing error for the 11-3 lead.
