Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The U.S Coast Guard Academy Women's Soccer team saw their season come to a close earlier this afternoon after bowing out in the Quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) playoff picture.
The Bears snuck into the playoffs with a win and a draw in the last two games of the regular season, locking up the #7 seed in the NCAA Championships-qualifying tournament for the NEWMAC. They traveled to #2 NEWMAC seed, and #25 nationally ranked, Babson College for a rematch from a game contested earlier this season. Babson won the previous meeting 3-0. Today, it was evident that Coast Guard had made some effective adjustments to help slow the Beavers.
Ultimately, it was the combo of graduate student Izzy Lynch and senior Maria Colon Figueroa who connected with each other twice for goals.
Down 2-0, Coast Guard junior Karagan Bulger cut the lead in half for Babson off a break away goal in the middle of the second half after a throw in by Anna Carleton. The Bears would get one more legitimate scoring opportunity in the 77th minute when Babson goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich made a nice save off a Sidney Palinkas shot on goal.
Coast Guard goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky put up a valiant effort, making eight saves on ten shots on goal. In total Babson fired off fourteen shots in the Coast Guard defensive end. The Bears managed eight shot attempts, with five finding the frames, and the one goal.
Head Coach Susan Grant had this to say on today's game:
"Babson was able to get into a rhythm against us. We showed good intensity in the second half and I am proud of the team for battling against a talented Babson squad and playing hard until the final whistle."
The season comes to a close with a final record of 6-9-3 for the Bears. The team will have a new look to it next season, with seven graduating cadets this May.
