Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Men's Soccer team saw their season come to a close on Saturday afternoon. In the regular season New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) finale, the Bears needed a win to secure a play-off berth and continue their memorable season. Ultimately, Emerson College used a second half goal to pull out the 1-0 win.
The game, played on Nitchman Field, was very much so controlled by the Bears for the majority of the afternoon. Coast Guard dominated Emerson in shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks, however, did not get the break they needed in this one to move their season forward.
Another strong defensive effort led by senior George Ackling, and supported by goalkeeper John Vaaler, did the job all afternoon save for one crucial moment in the 52nd minute.
After Emerson took the lead, Coast Guard would put together more three more legitimate scoring opportunities, but had their efforts go unrewarded.
The loss is a disappointing one, despite Emerson's tremendous season leading up to today's contest. The Bears stellar season is now concluded.
Head Coach Chris Parsons remarked:
"Today was a really tough way to end the season. I am disappointed for our first-class cadets, who saw their careers end today. We had a great season and are proud of all we accomplished. Unfortunately, our dominance today did not result in a victory."
The 2022 Bears recorded ten wins and eleven shut-outs, scoring twenty-seven goals along the way. It is the fourth time in Coast Guard has reached ten wins in a season in the last ten seasons, and second straight year.
