Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The T.C. #12 Captains jersey came through once again for the Coast Guard Academy Men's Soccer team on Tuesday evening. Behind the efforts of senior John Flood, the Bears secured their tenth win of the season with a 2-1 victory over non-conference opponent UMass-Dartmouth.
In what was another tense, tightly contested road game for Coast Guard, Flood buried his second and third goals of the season, one in each half, including tonight's game-winner. A laser pass from John DiTommaso to Flood opened up the scoring 26 minutes into the contest. Dartmouth would answer with a goal of their own just five minutes later on a score by Justin Petrillo, assisted by Cameron Jacob. Interestingly enough, that would be the lone shot on goal for the Corsairs for the entire evening - and for most of the night, it would look like it might just be enough. That is until the Flood-DiTommaso struck gold again late in the second half.
With under ten minutes to play, Flood fired off his fourth shot of the night off a feed from DiTommaso and Charles Fish, and found the back of the net, sending the Coast Guard sideline into a tizzy. The Bears defense, and goalkeeper John Vaaler, would hold solid for the remaining handful of minutes and close out the road win.
Head Coach Chris Parsons was noticeably excited in the post-game, once again praising his senior leader:
"UMass-Dartmouth was another midweek road opponent who gave us a good fight! Fortunately, we found the back of the net late! Credit to #12 John Flood for leading the way. Now our focus is the big match Saturday!"
Every point counts for the Bears as their season comes down to the final regular season game of 2022, against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent, Emerson College. To paint the play-off picture, Emerson currently holds a one game NEWMAC lead over the Bears for the #3-seed in the Conference tournament. A win on Saturday would give Coast Guard the conference record tie, but overall record lead, propelling them ahead for the play-off push.
The much anticipated match-up between the 10-2-4 Bears and the 9-2-5 Lions will take place on Nitchman Field, onboard the Coast Guard Academy, on Saturday, October 29th, 2022 at 12pm EST.
