Men's Soccer Posts Second Straight Win Over Buccaneers

Box Score

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- The Coast Guard Academy Men's Soccer team posted their second straight 2-0 victory, this time over non-conference opponent, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Charles Fish scored his third goal in the last two games and helped lead the Bears to their ninth win of the season.

The Bears had another outstanding defensive performance, backed once again by another shutout goalkeeping effort from John Hudson. The defensive efforts that blanketed the Bucaneers were led by familiar faces George Ackling and Michael Pinella, but the Bears also got critical minutes of solid gameplay from the likes of senior Ryan King, first-year Bown Giesbrecht, and sophomore John Prosperi. As a unit they hunkered down, holding Mass Maritime to only two shot on goal opportunities for the entirety of the contest - one at the tail end of each half.

Also easing the efforts in their defensive end of the field, was another hail storm of offensive attacks from the Bears offense. After tallying ten shots in the previous two games combined, Fish attempted nine tonight alone, with five being on target, and one finding the back of the net on an unassisted goal that opened up the scoring in the second half.

As the shot attempts continued to rain down, Coast Guard fans had a feeling that it was just a matter of time before another found the back of the net. And they were correct. Late in the second half, defenseman Michael O'Brien delivered a strike on a clear attempt to find sophomore Micah Messner who delivered a strike to put the Bears up 2-0. Coast Guard wouldn't look back for the remainder of the game.

Head Coach Chris Parsons acknowledged the resolve his team showed tonight on a short turnaround and on the road:

"We played some excellent soccer against a determined Mass Maritime side that defended resolutely. It took awhile, but we scored two excellent goals and will take the result on a road weeknight trip."

The win jumps Coast Guard to 9-2-3, while Mass Maritime drops to 1-11-2.

Coast Guard will stay the road warriors as they have their third straight away game coming this Saturday, October 22nd, 2022 when they travel to Wheaton College (MA) for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at 2pm EST.
