Women's Soccer Gets Critical Win over Smith

Box Score

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Women's Soccer team used a goal in each half of their game this afternoon to claim a win over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe, Smith College.

The Bears traded goals with Pioneers in a two minute span that resulted in a 1-1 deadlock at the break. Senior Molly Huynh opened the scoring for both sides with an unassisted goal in the 24th minute of the contest. The break came when Huynh successfully intercepted a clear attempt from the Smith defense. It was Huynh's second goal of the season. Smith would recover on the very next possession however to pull even when Morgan Watson netted an unassisted 40 yard strike of her own past Coast Guard goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky

After jockeying for position back and forth to start the second half, junior Sidney Plinks found sophomore Riley Vicinanzo for, what would be, the game winning goal in the 61st minute.

Coast Guard held the advantage on possessions, shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks over the Pioneers in what was a much needed in-conference victory. The win improves Coast Guard's record to 5-5-2 (2-3-1 in the NEWMAC), while Smith drops to 4-6-1 (1-3-1).

Next up, the Bears will be on the road once again for another NEWMAC game in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by Wheaton College at 1pm EST on Saturday, October 15th 2022.
