Last Second Goal Lifts Babson Over Coast Guard

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Maria Colon Figueroa scored with four seconds to go in regulation to lift Babson to a 2-1 victory over Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Babson improves to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while Coast Guard drops to 2-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Morgan Krauss had a goal and senior Katie Korzec chipped in with an assist for the Beavers. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich finished with three saves to improve to 3-0-1 on the year for Babson.

Sophomore Chase Merrick scored the first goal of the game in the 41st minute for Coast Guard as she picked up her own rebound on her first initial shot, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead at the half.

Trailing 1-0, Babson pulled even just 1:34 into the second half. Senior Julianna Abrams' cross skipped off a defender to Krauss, who settled the ball with her back to goal and tucked her finish inside the left post for her second goal of the season.

Hope Drake-Duval, who had seven saves, kept the game deadlocked by getting a hand on Babson senior Sydney McLaughlin's shot that was headed for the far post in the 66th minute. Coast Guard nearly went in front in the 80th minute as Merrick's rebound attempt was smothered by Fedosiewich in the goal mouth after sophomore Sidney Palinkas hit the crossbar from a tough angle along the left wing.

The game-winning goal in the waning seconds came following a goal kick. Korzec won the initial ball in the midfield and Colon Figueroa took space in front of her and launched a 35-yard shot that went over Drake-Duval and off the inside of the left post for her second marker of the fall.

The Beavers finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots and held a slim 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

Coast Guard is back in action on the road at Wentworth on Wednesday, September 29 at 6 PM.
