Bears Fall at #23 Babson in NEWMAC Opener

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Graduate student Allie Puccio led all players with 11 kills and junior Lauren MacDonald finished with seven kills and a career-high six blocks to help 23rd-ranked Babson College defeat the visiting Coast Guard Academy in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-12, 25-20) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.

With the win, Babson improves to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Coast Guard drops to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC. Babson has now won 43 straight home matches.

Junior Jordan Lapins finished with nine kills and classmate Laura Zuloaga and sophomore Lulu McShane added five apiece for the Beavers. Fellow sophomore Caroline Applewhite dished out 29 assists and seniors Jacalyn Pell and Maddie Malee recorded 16 and 15 digs, respectively, in the win.

Junior Bella Fleeger registered 10 kills and classmate Noelle Tursky finished with 21 assists, 14 digs, four kills and three blocks to lead the Bears.

Coast Guard took its biggest lead of the opening set at 16-10 on a kill by senior Lauren Hatfield before the Green and White went on an 11-4 spurt that included three kills from Lapins to go in front for the first time at 21-20. After trading errors, Zuloaga gave the Beavers their first game point with a kill only to see senior Amanda Dake (Victor, N.Y.) respond with a kill for the Bears to tie the match at 24-24. McShane's second kill of the frame put the hosts up 25-24 and MacDonald and Lapins combined for a block on set point for a 1-0 advantage.

Game two featured 12 ties and three lead changes before Coast Guard evened the match at a set apiece with a two-point victory. Neither team led by more than three and with the stanza deadlocked at 23-23, the Bears used a kill from Fleeger and a Babson attack error to close out the game. It was just the second set the Beavers have dropped all season.

The Beavers dominated the third set hitting .333 and serving up five aces, including three by Pell, to cruise to a 2-1 lead. Game four was tied at 10-10 before the Green and White went in front for good on kills by Puccio and Zuloaga as part of a four-point run. Coast Guard got as close as two at 14-12 but was unable to overcome 10 attack errors in the frame.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Springfield, while Coast Guard hosts Smith.
