Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.-- Junior John Flood scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute to give Coast Guard men's soccer their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Saturday afternoon as the Bears defeated WPI 2-1. Coast Guard, who is #5 in the region, improves to 6-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while WPI's unbeaten streak is snapped at 3-1-1 and drops to 0-1 in the NEWMAC. WPI is ranked #8 nationally and #1 regionally.
Flood's first career game-winner came off a rebound from a shot by freshman Lucas Tabit in the 64th minute.
The Engineers, ranked #8 nationally and #1 in New England, got on the board first in the 22nd minute as Franco Bazzini put away a rebound from a shot by Luke Savoie, for his fourth goal of the season.
Senior Robbie Fugett found classmate Mike Daunt in the 47th minute to put away his fourth goal of the season and the Bears first goal of the game.
WPI had a 14-11 edge in shots and both teams had two corner kicks.
Coast Guard goalkeeper Josh Hudson made four saves in his opening 45 minutes of play and junior John Vaaler made one save to close out the game. WPI's goalkeeper Ryan Martin made six saves in the loss for the Engineers.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, September 22 as they travel to Mitchell at 4 PM.
