Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard exploded for six runs in the second inning of game two to earn a split of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with Wheaton. The Lyons won the opener 2-0 before Coast Guard won the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.
Coast Guard is now 6-2 overall and in conference play while Wheaton is 3-3 both overall and in the NEWMAC.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Springfield in a NEWMAC doubleheader at noon.
GAME ONE: WHEATON 2, COAST GUARD 0
Sarah Pritchard fired a four-hit shutout and struck out five without walking a batter and Katelyn Barton homered to lead the Lyons to the game one win.
Pritchard (2-1) and Coast Guard freshman Amanda Moore were matching zeros in a pitcher's duel into the bottom of the sixth when Barton laced a line-drive solo homer to center for a 1-0 lead.
The Lyons added an unearned run in the seventh for insurance as Allison Weston singled, moved to second on a passed ball, and came around on a throwing error.
Moore (3-1) went the distance for the Bears and allowed seven hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out nine.
Hannah Arkin had two hits to lead Wheaton.
GAME TWO: COAST GUARD 9, WHEATON 1 (5 INNINGS)
Coast Guard exploded for six runs in the second inning and Isabelle Shroyer (3-1) allowed just six hits and one unearned run while walking one and fanning four as the Bears earned the split.
Katie Becker was 3 for 3 with a three-run homer and four RBI's while Christine Carey was 3 for 3 with a double, two RBI's, and two runs scored to lead the Bears.
The Bears came out swinging early in game two as Carey had an RBI double before an RBI single by Becker gave Coast Guard an early 2-0 lead.
Wheaton cut the lead in half in the second with an unearned run on a misplay in the outfield to make the score 2-1.
Coast Guard blew the game as Becker's three-run homer to left highlighted the six-run second. Shroyer had an RBI double while Maggie Perez added an RBI single in the inning as the Bears took an 8-1 lead.
Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo's RBI ground out pushed the lead to 9-1 in the third.
Allicyn Cole and Julia McLintock each had two hits for the Lyons.
Emma Candelaria (1-2) worked one inning and allowed five earned runs to take the loss.
