Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Coast Guard men's soccer defeated WPI 2-0 at home in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal on Tuesday night. The fourth-seeded Bears improve to 12-4-1 overall, while the fifth-seeded Engineers season ends at 10-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard extends its win streak to four as the Bears advance to the NEWMAC semifinals on Thursday, November 4 at MIT, time TBA.
Junior Noah Engstrom put the Bears on the board first in the 15th minute with his third goal in as many games, as freshman Jude Sargent received the ball off a throw-in and tipped it over for Engstrom, tallying his fourth game-winning goal this season and sixth goal overall.
WPI put the pressure on in the first half with nine shots compared to six for the Bears but Coast Guard held a 1-0 throughout the first half.
In the 60th minute, senior Mike Daunt extended the Bears lead, 2-0 off a penalty kick, for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Coast Guard had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks and WPI had a 13-10 advantage in shots.
Coast Guard sophomore goalkeeper Josh Hudson made six saves in the shutout as he improved to 6-2 on the season. WPI junior goalkeeper Roe Hendrick made four saves for the Engineers and finished the season at 5-3-2.
