Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- MIT, ranked fifth nationally, scored a goal in each half to beat Coast Guard 2-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game and the Bears final home game of the season.
MIT improves to 16-1-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference while the Bears drop to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC.
The Engineers had a great opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as Isabella Struckman picked up a loose ball close to the goal line but defender Kelly Wade saved it and cleared it out to keep the game scoreless.
MIT got on the board in the 35th minute when Natalie Barnouw served a corner kick which went off of Meagan Rowlett for the goal and the 1-0 lead.
Maya Nielan's header off a corner kick from Daena Schuh in the 80th minute closed the scoring.
MIT outshot Coast Guard 23-8.
Lauren Castle (9-0) made two saves in the first half to get the win. Ava Gilikin registered a pair of saves in goal in the second half as MIT recorded its 13th shutout of the season.
Hope Drake-Duval made six saves in goal for Coast Guard.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night at Mount Holyoke in a NEWMAC match at 6:00.
