Bears Beat No. 25 Springfield for the First Time in Program History in NEWMAC Opener

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Sophomore Brielle Pearce tallied two goals and an assist to lead Coast Guard women's soccer to a 3-0 victory over No. 25 Springfield, for the first time in program history, in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are now 2-5 on their season and 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield drops to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Coast Guard was 0-20-1 in the 21 previous meetings with Springfield. This was just the second time in the series that the Bears scored more than one goal as Coast Guard lost 4-3 in 2001.

Freshman Alexandra Murphy scored her first collegiate goal in the 27th minute with help from Pearce to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Pearce scored her first goal of the season in the 54th minute from junior Sabrina Robertson to extend the Bears lead, 2-0. Pearce tallied her second goal of the game in the 80th minute, unassisted to give the Bears the 3-0 final and first NEWMAC victory of the season.

Springfield outshot the Bears 24-12 and had a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Coast Guard freshman goalkeeper Sarah Schollenberger made 10 saves to earn her second shutout for the Bears and improves to 2-3 on the season. Springfield sophomore goalkeeper Emma O'Sullivan made six saves for the Pride.

The Bears return home on Wednesday, September 25 when they host Wesleyan at 4:00 PM in non-conference action.
