Bears Win First of Season at Salve

NEWPORT, R.I.-- Coast Guard women's soccer picked up their first victory of the season, 1-0 on the road on Thursday night against Salve Regina. The Bears are now 1-4, while Salve drops to 2-2.

Senior Lydia VanWinkle scored the lone goal of the game, her first of the season in the 56th minute to secure the Bears first win of the season.

Coast Guard had 11 shots in the first half but the score remained 0-0 at the half. Van Winkle put away the game winner in the 56th minute as the Bears held on for a 1-0 final.

Coast Guard held a 21-13 shot advantage and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears freshman goalkeeper Sarah Schollenberger made seven saves in the victory, earning her first career shutout. Salve's goalkeeper Jenna Park also made seven saves but drops to 2-2 on the season.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, September 17 at 3:45 PM when they travel to Connecticut College.
