WPI Sweeps Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- WPI swept Coast Guard softball in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon. WPI took the first game, 15-10, and 11-1 in the second in five innings. The Bears drop to 16-14 overall and 6-6 in the NEWMAC. WPI improves to 21-7 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow, April 13 at home in a NEWMAC doubleheader against Wellesley at 1 & 3 PM.

GAME ONE; WPI 15, COAST GUARD 10

Freshman Maggie Perez (2-for-4) hit her first-career home run to bring in four RBI's to lead Coast Guard softball in a 15-10 setback. Junior Courtney McKenna (2-for-4) had two RBI's and sophomore Charlee Kraiss (3-for-4), senior Sharayah Simco (1-for-3), and junior Audrey Bartz (2-for-4) all brought in one run each.

WPI got on the board first on a SAC fly by Nicole Kuberka to send Lindsay Ambrosino home. Cassie Graca hit an RBI single to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead.

Ambrosino hit a two-run homer as the Engineers extended their lead 4-0.

In the top of the third, Hailey McCasland hit an RBI single to give WPI a 5-0 advantage.

Kraiss had an RBI single to put the Bears up on the board, sending junior Claire Hurley home as Coast Guard trailed 5-1.

WPI scored six more runs in the top of the fifth, including a three-run homer to extend the Engineers lead, 11-1.

The Bears scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth including a grand slam by Perez to bring the Bears within two, 11-9.

Brittany Bolster hit a two-run single to increase their lead by four, 13-9 in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Graca hit a two-run homer to give WPI a 15-9 advantage.

Bartz hit her third home run of the season to give the Bears one more run with the 15-10 final.

GAME TWO; WPI 11, COAST GUARD 1 FIVE INNINGS

Caroline Wood opened the game with a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead for WPI .

In the top of the second Ambrosino hit an RBI single to extend the Engineers lead 3-0.

Junior Kayla Sowers put the Bears on the board with an RBI single to shortstop to cut the deficit, 3-1.

WPI scored eight runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to the 11-1 final.
