Pearce Scores Game-Winner in OT for Bears Third Straight Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Brielle Pearce scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Coast Guard women's soccer as the Bears defeated Wellesley 4-3 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC, for the first time in program history. Wellesley falls to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

In the 94th minute, junior Felicia Lombardi carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent a cross to Pearce who was cutting to the far post as she beat Wellesley senior goalkeeper Olivia Reckley to give the Bears the 4-3 victory in overtime.

Pearce also netted the Bears first goal of the game in the fourth minute as senior defender Valerie Hines sent a long ball for Pearce to beat her defender and put the Bears up on the board 1-0.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute as junior Kat Retz brought the ball into the box and fired one to the far post for her first goal of the season.

Wellesley cut their deficit, 2-1 as senior Deyanira Ibarra put away a rebound that bounced off the post from freshman Eliza Roys initial shot.

Senior Julia Jung tied the game 2-2 for the Blue as the ball slipped under Coast Guard freshman goalkeeper Sarah Schollenberger in the 27th minute.

Ibarra gave Wellesley a 3-2 lead in the 35th minute as freshman Thea Feldgoise sent a through ball in the box as Ibarra picked it up to tally her second goal of the game.

Sophomore Abby McGuire scored her first collegiate goal coming from a header sent by senior Claire Hurley on a corner kick in the 58th minute to tie the game 3-3.

Coast Guard outshot Wellesley 27-6 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Schollenberger made one save for the Bears and improves to 4-4 on her season. Reckley had 14 saves in the loss for the Blue and falls to 4-6 on her season.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, October 8 when they travel to Mount Holyoke for a 6:00 PM kickoff to continue NEWMAC play.

Prior to the game Coast Guard wore pink shirts and pink socks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
