Hurley Leads Bears to Non-Conference Win Over Wentworth

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior Claire Hurley scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead Coast Guard women's soccer to a 5-2 victory over Wentworth in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears are now 4-6 overall, as the Leopards drop to 4-6-1.

Hurley is now the third all-time leading scorer for Coast Guard women's soccer with 29 career goals. Olivia Grant ('00-'03) is second all-time with 32 and Hillary Allegretti ('01-'04) is first with 33.

The Bears got on the board first in the 12th minute when Hurley dished a pass to classmate Lydia VanWinkle at the top of the box as she buried her shot just under to crossbar to notch her second goal of the season.

In the 34th minute, junior Kylee Ballard sent in a cross, meeting Hurley charging towards the far post to put away her fourth goal of the season, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. Coast Guard had a 13-4 lead in shots at the half and a 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears extended their lead, 3-0 in the 48th minute when freshman Reilly Pogoloff sent the ball to classmate Anna Carleton as she took her shot from outside the box to the far post for her second goal of the season.

The Leopards got on the board to cut the deficit, 3-1 in the 61st minute as freshman Macy Paquin sent a through ball to junior Abigail Meyers for her first goal of the season. Wentworth scored again just five minutes later as senior Jess Poratti cut inside the box and fired away her shot to the near post to bring the Leopards within one.

Hurley scored her second goal of the game off a breakaway pass from freshman Alexandra Murphy and her fifth and final goal of the game was following a free kick outside the box that she sent to the near post to give the Bears the 5-2 final.

Coast Guard freshman goalkeeper Sarah Schollenberger made five saves in the win for the Bears, and junior Allison Haynes also had five saves for Wentworth.

The Bears outshot the Leopards, 26-10 and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears are back home this Saturday at 3:00 PM as they host Wellesley in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action during Homecoming and will have their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.
