CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Second-seeded WPI scored three runs in each of the first two innings and eliminated fifth-seeded Coast Guard with an 8-3 win in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament elimination game at top-seeded MIT.

Coast Guard finishes the season with a record of 22-13, its first 20 win season since 2013 while the Bears made their first NEWMAC tournament appearance since 2012. WPI improves to 29-12 on the season advancing to the losers' bracket final on Saturday at noon.

It was the final game for Coast Guard seniors Emma Hvozdovich and Casey Cruzpino.

Hvozdovich finishes her career fifth all-time at the Academy with 17 homers, sixth with 106 runs scored and 105 RBI's and ninth with 144 hits.

WPI scored three times on three hits in the first an added three unearned runs with a pair of hits and two errors in the second to take a 6-0 lead. The Engineers would add two more runs in the third for an 8-0 lead.

Coast Guard got its first hit of the game when sophomore Courtney McKenna led off the fourth with a double and she later came around on a throwing error to make the score 8-1.

Sophomore Carly Hattman led off the fifth with a walk, stole second and later scored on an obstruction call before sophomore Audrey Bartz added an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Bears would however leave the bases loaded in the fifth.

Freshman Sydney Arendt (11-3) took the loss for the Bears as she was charged with six runs, three earned in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Cruzpino singled in the last at-bat of her career and junior Emily Hogan and sophomore Kayla Sowers also had a hit for Coast Guard.
