Bears Drop Two to Engineers

WORCESTER, Mass. -  Coast Guard dropped two games to WPI, 11-3 and 8-3, Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

With the losses, the Bears fall to 16-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Engineers improve to 20-8 and 10-2 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard was led by senior Emma Hvozdovich went a combined 1-5 with a homerun, two RBI's and a two runs scored. Sophomore Kayla Sowers was 5-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI while senior Casey Cruzpino was 1-5 with an RBI.

Senior Nina Murphy-Cook was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Classmate Ama Biney went 3-8 with a double, a homerun, an RBI and two runs scored while junior Renee LeClaire was 3-8 with a triple and two RBI's. Junior Caraline Wood had the Engineers other homerun.

In game one, WPI wasted little time getting on the board as Biney led off the bottom of the first with a homerun to left field. LeClaire then added to the lead in the first with a run coming across the plate.

After the Engineers built up a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, Hvozdovich cut into the lead with a two run homerun to left field plating sophomore Carly Hattman making the score 5-2.

WPI however outscored Coast Guard 6-1 the rest of the way ending the game in six innings, 11-3.

In game two, Coast Guard took the lead in the top of the first as they took advantage of an error by the right fielder with the bases loaded plating both sophomore Audrey Bartz and Hvozdovich.

The Engineers however scored eight unanswered runs in the next four innings and held the Bears to one run the rest of the way taking game two 8-3.

Sophomore Julia Ferris (8-6) took the loss in both game pitching a combined three innings allowing five earned runs and striking out one. Freshman Sydney Arendt relieved her in each game pitching a combined five and a third innings allowing eight earned runs and striking out one.

Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow, April 14th, when they take on the Wellesley Blue. First pitch is noon.
