Bears Fall to Cardinals in Non-Conference Action

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Coast Guard dropped two games to NESCAC foe Wesleyan, 6-1 and 4-3 Wednesday afternoon.

With the losses the Bears fall to 9-3 on the season while the Cardinals win their sixth straight and improve to 8-5.

Junior Emily Hogan went 1-3 on the day with a run scored and an RBI. She had Coast Guard's only extra base hit in game two. Senior Casey Cruzpino went 3-6 with an RBI while classmate Emma Hvozdovich added an RBI to her team leading total (16). Freshman finished with a stolen base and the Bears other RBI.

In game one, Wesleyan used RBI doubles from Marina Williams, Rielly Wieners and Brenna Monroe to go along with a strong pitching performance from Julie McDonald (2-2) who scattered five hits over seven innings allowing one earned run.

Cruzpino had the Bears lone RBI in the top of the fourth as she knocked a single to center plating sophomore Courtney McKenna.

In game two, Coast Guard rallied in the top of the fifth scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Hogan got the rally started as she doubled to leftfield scoring sophomore Claire Hurley. Kraiss then reached on an error which brought Hogan around to score followed by single from Hvozdovich, scoring sophomore Carly Hattman giving the Bears their first lead of the day.

The Cardinals however rallied with one run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the sixth to earn the sweep.

Sophomore Julia Ferris (5-2) and freshman Sydney Arendt (4-1) split the losses as Ferris pitched a combined nine innings allowed seven earned runs between the two games striking out six. Arendt combined to pitch three innings allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out one.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday, March 30th when they host the Clark Cougars for a NEWMAC  doubleheader. First pitch is 3:00 PM.
