Bears Win Record 10th; Will Host Quarterfinal on Tuesday

NORTON, Mass. – Junior Rachel Samotis' goal in the 72nd minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave Coast Guard its first ever win over Wheaton as the Bears beat the Lyons 2-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale for both teams.

It was a school record 10th win for the Bears, who earned the fourth seed and will host a NEWMAC tournament game for the first time in program history on Tuesday night against fifth-seeded WPI at 7:00.

Wheaton was 20-0-1 against Coast Guard with 20 shutouts in the series entering the game.

The Lyons finish the regular season 11-6-1 overall and 4-6 in the NEWMAC while the Bears finish 10-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the NEWMAC. 

Wheaton took the lead on a goal by Jaime Rattenni in the 26th minute, the only goal of the first half.

Junior Claire Hurley tied the game in the 61st minute for the Bears, her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Samotis scored the eventual game winner in the 72nd minute.

Coast Guard held a 17-11 advantage in shots.

Freshman Katharina Commins (9-6-1) made two saves to get the win in goal for the Bears.
