Bears Earn 1-0 Win Over Corsairs in Wind and Rain

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In their final non-conference game of the season, Coast Guard won their ninth game of the season 1-0 over UMass Dartmouth on a rainy and windy Tuesday night.

With the win, the Bears improve to 9-4-3 while the Corsairs fall to 3-10-1 overall.

Senior Luke Telang scored his fourth goal of the season for Coast Guard.  Sophomore Pryor Miller tallied his first collegiate point on the assist.

Both teams traded early opportunities as sophomore Brock Hassett sent a cross in from the left side to the center of the box in the ninth minute. Sophomore Gio Ottomanelli ran on to the pass unmarked but his shot was put over the bar and out of play.

In the 12th minute sophomore Elvis Mendes settled a pass in the center of the field and dribbled in on goal. Mendes struck a dipping shot from just outside Coast Guard penalty box forcing senior goalkeeper Jake Sorenson to punch the ball over the bar and out of play.

Ottomanelli was on the attack once again in the 21st minute as he picked the pocket of a Corsair defender and charged in on goal. He struck an early low, skipping shot to the left corner but freshman goalkeeper Mike Tranghese made the diving save, knocking the ball out of play for a corner.

Telang found the back of the net in the 24th minute as a quick give-and-go between him and Miller sprung him into the right side of the UMass Dartmouth penalty box. Telang took a touch and fired his shot to the opposite post for the 1-0 halftime lead and the eventual game winner.

The second half saw minimal scoring chance as the Bears held on for their ninth win of the season and their first win against the Corsairs in three tries.

Sorenson (6-3-2) made one save on one shot on goal for his sixth shutout of the season and the team's 10th overall. Sorenson is tied for second in the conference in shutouts while the team is also second in the NEWMAC, just behind Springfield's 11.

Tranghese (1-6) made four saves on five shots on goal allowing the lone tally.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, October 28th, when they host Babson in their final NEWMAC game of the season. Opening kickoff is noon. The Bears have already clinched a playoff spot but are still battling for seeding in the NEWMAC tournament.
