Bears, Engineers Battle to Scoreless Tie

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard and MIT played to a scoreless tie in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon.

With the tie, the Bears move to 8-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. The Engineers are now 5-6-4 on the season and 2-3-1 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard were on the offense early when junior Landon Klopfenstein served the ball into the box from the right side in the 15th minute. Senior Ryan Dandan rose up in the center of the box and redirected the cross towards goal but put it over the bar and out of play.

The Bears then tested sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Cowham in the 38th minute when sophomore Brock Hassett settled a pass at the top of the Engineers penalty box. Hassett rifled a knuckling shot on goal forcing Cowham to punch the shot over the bar and out of play making the halftime score 0-0.

The opportunity of the game came in the 59th minute of the second half when Klopfenstein slipped sophomore Gio Ottomanelli into the MIT penalty box. Ottomanelli ripped a shot towards goal but Cowham sprawled out to block the shot. Freshman Noa Pagatpatan secured the rebound and sent a shot back towards goal. His shot careened off the crossbar, straight down and back into the penalty box. Before Coast Guard could get another shot off, a foul was called and the attack ended.

The Engineers began to press offensively after this opportunity and in the 60th minute put their best shot on frame. Junior Joshua Wilson received a pass at the top of the Bears penalty box. Wilson took a touch and fired a shot to the bottom right corner. Senior goalkeeper Jake Sorenson dove to his right and stretched out to knock the shot past the post and out of play.

After the regulation time ended 0-0, overtime was a defensive battle with shots equaling 2-1 in favor of Coast Guard. The Bears had their best attempt in the second overtime when junior Patrick Palermo-re sending a low corner into the center of the box. The service however rolled through the box with neither team connecting and the ball rolling out of play making the final score 0-0.

Sorenson (5-3-2) made two saves on two shots on goal for his fifth shutout of the season.

Cowham (5-6-4) made three saves on three shots on goal for his sixth shutout of the season.

Coast Guard is back in action on October 24th, for their final non-conference game of the season against UMass-Dartmouth. Opening kickoff is 6:00.
