Bears Fall to Engineers in OT

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Brendan Nemes scored two goals for WPI, as the Coast Guard fell to the Engineers 2-1 in overtime in a NEWMAC Men's Soccer matchup Saturday in Alumni Stadium.

With the loss, the Bears slips to 8-4-1 (3-2 NEWMAC), while the Engineers ups its record to 9-4 and 5-0 in league play,

Senior Austin Read finished off a corner kick taken by junior Patrick Palermo-Re 6:29 into the matchup. As a team, the Bears took all six shots and were awarded both corner kicks in the first half.

In the second half, Nemes tied the game when he found the bottom left corner off a feed from sophomore Luke Reiniger in the 78th minute.

Nemes delivered the game-winning goal with 56 seconds left in the first overtime as he scored from the top of the 18-yard box. After taking their first shot at 54:08, WPI took 10 of the 11 shots the rest of the way, including two in the extra frame.

Senior Jake Sorenson (5-3-1) made zero saves on two shots on goal allowing the the two late goals.

WPI senior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (8-4) collected the only save of the game. 

The Bears are at Mass. Maritime Tuesday for a 7pm match.
