Bears Splits with Beavers

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Coast Guard earned their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season splitting with Babson taking game one 4-3 and falling in game two 9-6.

Game One: Coast Guard (8-17, 1-5) 4 Babson (12-9, 3-4) 3

Freshman Hayden Short had a game high three RBI's leading the Bears to a 4-3 victory over the Beavers in game one of the doubleheader.

Short was 2-4 at the dish with a double to go with her three RBI's. Short is third in the conference in batting average (.470) and second in RBI's (28). Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich was 2-3 with two runs scored and a double. Freshman Emily Hogan was 1-3, two runs scored and a stolen base. She is third in the NEWMAC with 17 stolen bases on the season.

Freshman Ashley Tango was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI while senior Caitie Benoit was 2-3 with a RBI. Sophomore Samantha Smith went 1-4 with a run scored and Senior Rachel Bullard had the teams other RBI.

Up 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Short knocked in two of her three RBI's on a double to right field plating Hvozdovich and Hogan for what would be the eventual game winner.

Senior Sarah Sorensen earned her fifth win of the season (5-12) allowing three runs on tens hits, striking out one and walking another. Sorensen put the final six batters of the game she faced down in order.

Sophomore Ali Reilly (6-7) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits, striking out four and walking three.

Game Two: Babson (13-9, 4-4) 9 Coast Guard (8-18, 1-6) 6

Babson scored four runs in the bottom of the six to come from behind and take 9-6 victory from Coast Guard in the second game of the double header.

Senior Cherokee Strickland was 1-4 with a team high two RBI's. Freshman Emily Hogan was 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored while classmate Malia Hindle went 1-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Junior Sara Cammuso was 1-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Junior Leslie Moore led the Beavers going 2-4 with a double and two RBI's while Sophomore Samantha Smith also had a double on top of going 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Josephine Mares was 2-2 with two runs scored.

The Bears held an early 6-2 lead, fueled by a four run second inning that saw Hindle, Cammuso, Hogan and sophomore Emma Hvozdovich all with RBI's

Babson however used three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the sweep and take game two.

Freshman Mackenzie Everett pitched 5.2 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on ten hits walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Emily Dow came in relief allowing one run on one hit .

Senior Madison Dinaso only made it 1.1 innings for the Beavers allowing four runs on sixth hits and walking one. Junior Leslie Moore earned the win in relief (4-1) allowing two runs, none earned, on three hits and walked two.

Coast Guard is back in action on Monday April 11th, when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for a doubleheader with WPI. First pitch is 4:30.
