Bears Swept to Close Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Tori Brown homered in each game and drove in five runs in the doubleheader leading Smith to a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) sweep of Coast Guard winning the opener 7-4 and the nightcap 10-2 in six innings.

Smith improves to 12-18 overall and 8-8 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard closes out the season with a record of 9-31 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

GAME ONE – SMITH 7, COAST GUARD 4

Brown, Allison Snyder and Lydia DeAngelo all homered for the Pioneers in the win.

Brown homered to left in the third for a 4-1 lead. DeAngelo had a solo shot to left in the fourth before Rowan Turner added a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead.

Coast Guard got two back in the fourth on a two-run single by freshman Emily Hogan making the score 6-4.

Snyder's solo blast in the sixth closed the scoring.

Snyder had three hits to lead Smith while Brittney Blokker, Alyssa Pioggia and Natalie Burchat each added two hits in the win for Smith.

Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich had two hits including a solo homer for the Bears while Hogan and junior Sara Cammuso also had two hits each for the Bears.

Burchat (8-6) went the distance and scattered ten hits while allowing four earned runs, walking two and fanning five to get the win.

GAME TWO – SMITH 10, COAST GUARD 2 (6 INNINGS)

Brown was 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI's and Smith scored six times in the fifth to blow the game open.

Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run homer by junior Cherokee Strickland.

Smith took the lead for good with three in the third as Caroline Kushner had an RBI groundout before Brown's two-run single gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

In the six run fifth, Brown started things off with a two-run homer before Snyder's two-run single gave Smith a 9-2 lead.

Turner (4-9) went the distance to get the win. She scattered six hits and allowed a pair of earned runs with three walks and five strikeouts.

Caroline Kushner, Joanna Giordano and Snyder each had two hits in the game two win for Smith.

Strickland had two hits for Coast Guard.
