Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard dropped two games to in-state rival Wesleyan 13-3 and 9-8 in nonconference action Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1: Wesleyan (13-4) 13 Coast Guard (5-12) 3
Sophomore Casey Cruzpino was 2-2 with two RBI's but the Bears fell to the Cardinals 13-3 in game one.
Freshman Emily Hogan was 2-3 with a run scored while sophomore Emma Hvozdovich went 1-3 with one RBI. Senior Hannah Ingerson went 1-3 and freshman Sharayah Simco was 1-2. Freshman Hayden Short had a run scored.
Wesleyan was led by freshman Rachel Kantor who was 3-3 with a run scored and four RBI's. Junior Isabel Linzer, senior Angelina Massoia, junior Jamie Hom and senior Amanda Roosa all had two RBI's.
Coast Guard erupted for three runs in the bottom of the first as Hogan led off with a double and would eventually come around to score on a passed ball. Later in the inning Cruzpino stepped to the plate with two outs and Hvozdovich and Short on second and third and she singled scoring both base runners.
However, this would be the only runs the Bears could muster as the Cardinals answered with 13 runs ending the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior Sarah Sorensen (3-9) pitched 3.2 innings allowing six runs, four earned on nine hits. Freshman Mackenzie Everett came in relief pitching 2/3 innings giving up five runs on five hits. Sophomore Emily Dow also pitched 2/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits.
Sophomore Julie McDonald (6-0) pitched five innings giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and struck out four.
Game 2: Wesleyan (13-4) 9 Coast Guard (5-13) 8
Junior Cherokee Strickland was 3-5 with a home run, three RBI's and a run scored but the Cardinals came from behind to squeak out a 9-8 win.
With her homerun, Strickland moves into a tie for ninth place in program history with nine career home runs.
Freshman Malia Hindle was 1-3 with two RBI's while freshman Hayden Short was 3-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich was 2-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
Junior Jamie Hom was 3-5 with three RBI's and two run scored while freshman Rachel Kantor was 2-5 with a run scored and three RBI's. Sophomore Julie McDonald was 2-5 with two RBI's.
With the score knotted at one in the bottom of the second the Bears scored four runs highlighted by a two run homerun by Strickland giving Coast Guard a 5-1 lead.
Wesleyan pushed ahead with five runs over the next two innings but the Bears once again took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Cruzpino singled in a run and Hindle brought two across with a double to center.
The Cardinals however stole the game in the final two innings, pushing across three runs for a 9-8 victory.
Senior Sarah Sorensen (3-10) pitched seven innings allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 15 hits, walking three and striking out two.
Senior Su Pardo (7-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings for the win giving up no runs and no hits and striking out five.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, April 1st when they host Wellesley for a NEWMAC double header. First pitch is 3:00 pm.
