Bears Swept in NEWMAC Opening Twin Bill

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Elizabeth Joseph hit a pinch hit two-run homer in the top of the eighth leading Springfield to a 7-4 extra inning win the opener before a 10-run third inning helped the Pride complete the sweep with a 14-3 five inning game in the nightcap of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opening doubleheader.

Springfield improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Bears dropped their fifth straight to dip to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

GAME ONE: SPRINGFIELD 7, COAST GUARD 4 (8 INNINGS)

The Pride scored three runs in the second as sophomore Mackenzie Navarro had a two-run double before senior Melissa Nelson added an RBI single.

Sophomore Talia Loda kept the Bears bats quiet allowing just two hits through the first five innings before Coast Guard erupted for four runs in the sixth to take the lead.

Freshman Allyson Holfinger's two-run single with the bases loaded got the Bears on the board before sophomore Casey Cruzpino followed with a two-run single giving the Bears a 4-3 lead after six.

Freshman Shelby Allen led off the seventh with a double and came around on a sacrifice fly by senior Jenna Webb to tie the game.

The Bears had a golden opportunity to win the game in the home half of the seventh as they had the bases loaded with just one out, but Allen, who game on in relief, got a strikeout and pop up to send the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, Joseph hit the two-run homer on the first pitch she saw before Navarro added an RBI double to close the scoring.

Nelson was 3 for 5 while Navarro and junior Simone Morin each had two hits in the game one win for Springfield.

Holfinger had two hits for the Bears.

Loda (4-5) work 7 1/3 innings and got the win allowing five hits and four runs while walking two and fanning three.

Senior Sarah Sorenson (3-8) went the distance allowing 11 hits and six earned runs in taking the loss.

GAME TWO: SPRINGFIELD 14, COAST GUARD 3 (5 INNINGS)

Springfield scored four runs in the first on first hits and cruised to the game two win.

Nelson had an RBI double to open the scoring, sophomore Kirsten Drobiak added an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch before the fourth run scored on an error for the 4-0 lead.

The Pride blew the game wide open sending 15 batters to the plate in the fourth and scoring ten runs on ten hits in the inning.

In that third inning, freshman Sam Cox, Joseph and sophomore Dani Gray each had two hits as the Pride took a 14-0 lead.

Coast Guard got all of its runs in the home half of the third, on a three-run homer to center by freshman Hayden Short, her team leading fourth of the season.

Allen (2-0) pitched the final three innings and allowed just two hits while walking one and fanning three to pick up the win.

Freshman Mackenzie Everett (1-2) was the starter and took the loss for Coast Guard.

Cox was 3 for 3 with three runs scored while Navarro, Nelson, Drobiak, Joseph and Gray each had two hits for the Pride.

Holfinger was 2 for 2 in the second game for Coast Guard.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Wesleyan in a doubleheader at 3:00.
