Bears Drop Home Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard dropped two tight games to Albertus Magnus on Thursday afternoon 2-1 and 3-0 in the Bears home opener to the 2016 season.

Game 1: Albertus Magnus (7-2) 2 Coast Guard (5-8) 1

Sophomore Brianna Whitfield hit a homerun in her first at bat leading the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over Coast Guard.

Freshman Hayden Short was 1-2 with a run scored and a RBI while junior Cherokee Strickland was 1-3 with a walk. Freshman Casey Cruzpino was 1-2 with a walk and both senior Hannah Ingerson and sophomore Emma Hvozdovich were 1-4.

Whitfield was 2-4 with the homerun, a RBI and a run scored, while junior Rachel Cataudella accounted for the other RBI. Sophomore Gillian Fortier was 2-3 and junior Megan Kelly was 1-3 with a run scored.

After the home run to open the game both teams settled down until the fifth inning when Albertus Magnus took advantage of a Bear's error plating a run as Cataudella reached on a fielder's choice scoring Kelly.

Short got one back in the bottom of the fifth as she crushed her third home run of the season over the center field fence.

Coast Guard however could not manage a hit over the final two innings as the Falcons took game one 2-1.

Senior Sarah Sorensen (3-7) allowed seven hits and one earned run over seven innings.

Freshman Kristin Cunning improved to 3-0 going 4.1 innings giving up one run on five hits, walking four and striking out one.  Sophomore Samantha Maselli earned the eight out save (1) allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one and walking one.

Game 2: Albertus Magnus (8-2) 3 Coast Guard (5-9) 0

The Falcons took the final game of the double header topping Coast Guard 3-0.

Senior Hannah Ingerson (1-3), junior Cherokee Strickland (1-3), sophomore Emma Hvozdovich (1-3) and freshman Sharayah Simco (1-1) had the four hits for the Bears in the game.

Sophomore Melissa Castillo was 2-3 with a run scored and senior Alyssa Puccilli was 1-4 with a double and a RBI. Freshman Megan Kelly was 1-4 with a run scored.

The Falcons did all their damage in the fourth, fifth and seventh scoring a run in each of those innings.

Freshman Mackenzie Everett (1-1) went seven innings giving up three runs on four hits, striking out a career high five batters and walking six.

Sophomore Megan Ferraro pushed her season record to 4-1 as she pitched seven scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out one.  

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday March 26th when they host Springfield College for a double header in the Bear's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener. First pitch is 12:00.
