Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Coast Guard dropped the final two game of their 2016 spring break trip falling to University of New England 7-4 and UMass Boston 8-5.
Game 9: University of New England (2-0) 7 Coast Guard (4-5) 4
The Nor'Easters used a four run second inning to take an early three run lead propelling University of New England to a 7-4 victory.
Junior Cherokee Strickland was 3-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored while freshman Hayden Short was 2-3 with a home run two RBI's and a run scored. Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich was 1-3 with a run scored and senior Hannah Ingerson tallied an RBI.
Freshman Avery Alberghini led University of New England going 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Lauren Jones was 2-4 with two RBI's and freshman Andrea Gosper was 1-2 with one run scored
Coast Guard struck in the top of the first inning as Short hit her second home run of the season with Hvozdovich on for an early two run lead.
The Nor'easters would however score five runs in the first two innings and then tack on two more in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-3 lead. The Bears would once again attempt to rally in the top of the seventh as Strickland cranked her second home run of the season but Coast Guard could not manage another run, dropping their second to last game of spring break.
Senior Sarah Sorensen (2-4) pitched six innings allowing seven runs, two earned, on hits and striking out one.
Junior Katelyn Austin (1-0) earned her first win of the season going six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out one. Freshman Sydnee Bessler pitched one inning of relief allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
Game 10: UMass Boston (1-0) 8 Coast Guard (4-6) 5
Junior Cherokee Strickland went 3-4 with 3 RBI's and a run scored but the Beacons came from behind to take an 8-5 decision in the Bears final game in Florida.
Strickland now leads the team with 13 RBI's on the season and is batting .351 with two home runs. Junior Sara Cammuso was 2-3 with one RBI while freshman Allyson Holfinger was 1-4 with an RBI. Freshman Hayden Short was 1-4 with two runs scored.
Short leads the team and is currently third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) batting .515 with 17 hits, six doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI's. Classmate Emily Hogan was 1-4 on the day with a run scored. Hogan is tied for second in the NEWMAC with nine stolen bases and second in the conference with 15 runs scored.
The Beacons were led by freshman Roxanne Vento who was 2-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Sophomore Morgan Bishop was 1-3 with an RBI.
The Bears had an early 5-2 lead going into the top of the sixth inning but UMass Boston put up six runs in the top of the sixth to take a three run lead and where able to close it out in the bottom of the seventh to win their opening game of the season.
Senior Sarah Sorensen (2-5) pitched 5.2 innings giving up eight runs on eight hits and three strike outs. Freshman Mackenzie Everett pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing one hit and no runs.
Freshman Vic Zechello got the start going five innings allowing five runs, two earned, and struck out five. Freshman Annie Thomas earned the win in relief going two innings allowing no runs and no hits and striking out three.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, March 16th, for their first game in New England as they travel to Roger Williams for a double header. Game times are 3:00 and 5:00
