Bears Comeback Falls Short

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Angelou Dunton had 14 kills,  ten digs and three aces, but it wasn't enough as Coast Guard's comeback bid fell short losing to host Susquehanna 3-2 in a non-conference game.

Susquehanna, which is receiving votes in the Division III national poll, won 25-12, 25-10, 23-25, 20-25, 15-6 for its seven straight win to improve to 24-5 on the season.

Coast Guard saw its season long five match win streak snapped as the Bears dropped to 14-10.

Junior Emma Saunders and freshman Alex Kempf each added seven kills and three blocks for the Bears. Freshman Makenna Martin had 34 assists to lead Coast Guard to go with 11 digs. Junior Michelle McGill had a team-high 12 digs and three aces.

Susquehanna, which hit .338 in the win, was led by Erin Byrne's match-high 17 kills.

The River Hawks jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first game and cruised to the 25-12 win.

The second game was much of the same for Susquehanna which led 6-1 and later 18-9 before scoring six of the final seven for the 25-10 win.

Coast Guard appeared to be on its way to getting swept trailing 16-8 in third set before the Bears responded by scoring six of the next eight to cut the deficit in half at 18-14. Susquehanna closed in on the win leading 22-17 before Coast Guard ran off eight of the final nine points for the 25-23 win.

The Bears kept the momentum by scoring the first five points of the fourth set before the River Hawks answered right back closing the lead to 6-5. Coast Guard used a 5-1 run later to open up a 16-11 lead and pushed the lead to 22-14 before Susquehanna scored five straight and six of the next seven making the score 23-20. Coast Guard would force a fifth game with a 25-20 win.

The River Hawks took command early in the fifth set scoring six straight to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The Bears closed to 8-5 before Susquehanna ran off seven of the final eight to win the match.

Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow as the Bears will take on both Cabrini and Rowan at Susquehanna beginning at 10:00.
