Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior setter Maggie Hine was named the Most Outstanding Player as Coast Guard won its own Bear Invitational with a pair of wins over Simmons and Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.
Coast Guard, which beat Newbury 3-0 on Friday on the opening night of the tournament, beat Simmons 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-14, 25-14) and Eastern Connecticut 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24) to improve to 4-0 on the season. Sophomore Madison Scott also earned a spot on the All-tournament team for the Bears.
Simmons junior Abby Hart, Newbury sophomore Lina Miranda and Eastern Connecticut junior Adrianna Mihalek were also named to the All-tournament team.
In the Bears opening match of the day, the win over Simmons, Coast Guard led 10-6 in the opening game before the Sharks ran off five straight for an 11-10 lead. Simmons led 17-15, but the Bears scored eight straight with junior Susan West serving to take a 23-17 lead and won 25-19.
Simmons (2-2) evened things with a 25-21 win in the second game. With the score tied at 11, the Sharks scored eight of the next nine points for a 19-12 edge before Coast Guard then scored eight of the next nine to tie the score 20-20. The Sharks scored four straight en route to the game two win.
Coast Guard won the third game 25-14 using a 9-1 spurt turning a 10-9 lead into a 19-10 advantage.
The Bears trailing 3-1 in the fourth game scored eight straight with sophomore Michelle McGill serving to take a 9-3 lead and cruise to the 25-14 win to close out the match.
Sophomore Summer Adams led the Bears with 11 kills and 12 digs while senior Maggie Hine had a match-high 32 assists.
Junior Cailin Frederickson led the Sharks with 12 kills to go with seven digs while sophomore Sarah Woodward finished with 10 digs in the loss.
In the final match of the day, Coast Guard scored seven of the last nine points in the opening game for a 25-18 win.
The Bears led 11-6 in the second game before Eastern closed to within 12-11, but the Bears would score 10 of the next 12 points for a commanding 22-13 lead and won 25-16.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third game and the Bears led 18-11 before Eastern scored eight of the next 11 to cut the deficit to 21-19. The Warriors scored four straight to force game point leading 24-23 before the Bears scored the final three to claim the championship.
Hine once again did a great job of running the Bears offense and recorded a match-high 34 assists to go with 12 digs. McGill led the Bears with 14 digs and four aces while West had a match-high 13 kills to lead the way.
Junior Hannah Bryant led Eastern (1-3) with eight kills while Loopy had a match-high 16 digs for the Warriors.
The Bears will have a week off before heading to archrival Merchant Marine for a noon match on Saturday, September 12th.
In the other two matches of the tournament on Saturday.
SIMMONS 3, NEWBURY 2
Simmons trailing 2-1 rallied for a 3-2 win (23-25, 25-17, 26-28, 25-20, 15-12) over Newbury. Junior Cailin Frederickson led the way with 18 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Sarah Woodward had 16 kills and a team-high 25 digs in the win for the Sharks. Junior Courtney Banks led the Nighthawks with 15 kills to go with 15 digs while sophomore Julia Leggett led the team with 25 digs.
EASTERN CONNECTICUT 3, NEWBURY 0
Junior Adrianna Mihalek had a team-high 10 kills while senior Allie Luppi had 15 digs leading Eastern Connecticut to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) win over Newbury. Miranda led Newbury with 12 kills go to with five digs while Banks added nine kills. Eastern Connecticut improved to 1-2 on the season while Newbury dropped to 1-3.
