Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Ashley Dumont hit 86.4 percent and had a match-high 19 kills leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Newbury on the opening night of the Bear Invitational.
Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 to improve to 2-0 on the young season while Newbury evens its record at 1-1.
Senior Maggie Hine led the Bears with 39 assists to go with six digs. Junior Susan West added nine kills while sophomore Michelle McGill had a team-high nine digs in the win.
Newbury led 11-6 in opening game before Coast Guard trailing 14-11 scored seven of the next eight for an 18-15 edge. The Nighthawks closed to within one at 19-18 and it remained a one point game 22-21 before the Bears scored the final three for a 25-22 win.
Coast Guard led 13-12 in the second game before running of six straight with West serving for a 19-12 lead en route to the 25-16 win.
The Bears again had a slim lead in the third set, 13-12 before running off four straight with West serving again for a 17-12 lead before winning 25-22.
Junior Courtney Banks led Newbury with 11 kills while adding nine digs. Sophomore Marlen Reynoso led the team with 18 assists while classmate Julia Leggett had a team-high 11 digs.
In the first match of the night, Simmons beat Eastern Connecticut 3-1 winning by game scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-20 as junior Kailin Frederickson had a match-high 14 kills to go with ten digs in the win for Simmons (1-1).
Junior Adrianna Mihalek led Eastern Connecticut (0-2) with 11 kills while adding 17 digs.
Day two of the Bear Invitational begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with Newbury taking on Simmons. Coast Guard will battle Simmons at 11 a.m. and Eastern Connecticut at 3 p.m.
