GORHAM, Maine - Two goals by senior Conor Murtagh gave Bridgewater State a 2-0 victory over Coast Guard in day one of the Husky Fall Classic hosted the University of Southern Maine.

Bridgewater State earned their first win of the season at 1-1 while the Bears fall to 0-2.

Bridgewater State struck early in the first half as freshman Filipe Gomes sent a cross into the box from the right wing. Murtagh met the service driving a one touch volley into the back of the net, giving Bridgewater State a 1-0 lead 7:05 into the match.

"In our second even game in a row, we came out on the losing end," said head coach Chris Parsons. "We fell behind early on a very nice counter by Bridgewater and then could have equalized before half but missed out opportunity."

In the second half Bridgewater State would once again again waste little time scoring as Gomes found Murtagh team up again just over three minutes into the half, for Murtagh's second of the game. The two goals in the games were the first for Murtagh on the year, who was MASCAC player of the year last season.

"I am disappointed we conceded a second goal early in the second half," added coach Parsons. " We had momentum and fitness on our side and we let it slip away"

Coach Parsons went on to say, "We do take positives away from the performance today and look forward to tomorrow."

Both teams took nine shots in the game and Bridgewater State only only put one more shot on goal than Coast Guard (5-4). Sophomore Austin Read led the Bears with three shots and two on frame.

Sophomore Jake Sorenson suffered his second loss of the season (0-2), making three saves on five shots on goal.

Junior Colin Jepson recorded his first win and shutout of the season (1-1), stopping all four shots on goal.

The Bears return to action in day two of the Husky Fall Classic as they play the Westfield State Owls tomorrow, September 5th. Kickoff is 1:30.
