Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard hit 29.6 percent in a season-opening 3-0 win over Mitchell, the first career win for the Bears first-year head coach Mike Bynon.
The Bears won by game scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-10. It was the first meeting between the two New London schools since 2010. Coast Guard is now 7-0 all-time against the Mariners.
In the opening game, Coast Guard scored the first eight points and led 13-2. Mitchell closed the gap to 15-9 causing the Bears to call timeout. Out of the timeout, Coast Guard scored five of the next six points for a 20-10 advantage. Mitchell would later score five straight to cut the deficit to 21-16 before Coast Guard scored the final four points for the 25-16 win.
The Bears jumped out to a 9-2 edge in game two. With Coast Guard leading 13-8, the Bears would run off 11 straight points en route to a 25-10 win.
Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-10 win and again it was a quick start as the Bears scored the first six points and led 9-1 and cruised to victory.
Senior Ashley Dumont led the Bears with seven kills while junior Susan West and freshman Stephanie Bullard each added five kills in the win. Senior Emily Gilland led the Bears with 11 digs while sophomore Madison Scott had a team-high five blocks for the Bears.
Senior Amanda Garcia had a match-high ten kills while classmate Kaisea Caramante led the way with 11 digs for the Mariners.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when the Bears host Newbury at 8 p.m. in the first night of the 2015 Bear Invitational before hosting Simmons at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Eastern Connecticut at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
