NEW LONDON, Conn. –  WPI spoiled Coast Guard's debut at home in the 2015 season as the Engineers swept the Bears 5-1 and 6-3 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

WPI, which has won seven straight, improves to 17-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference while Coast Guard evens its record at 9-9 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.

In the opener, sophomore Caroline Medino (4-1) scattered five hits and allowed an earned run in five innings of work while walking one and striking out three to get the win for WPI.

WPI scored twice in the third to break a 1-1 tie as senior Katie Burnila had an RBI triple before freshman RiAnna May followed with an RBI double for a 3-1 lead.

The Engineers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth as freshman Ama Biney had an RBI double and scored on the same play on a throwing error to make the score 5-1.

Coast Guard scored its only run in the second on an RBI single by Sara Sammuso.

Freshman Nina Murphy-Cook and Biney each had two hits for WPI while Cammuso had two hits for the Bears in the game one loss.

Junior Sarah Sorensen (8-7) went the distance and allowed three earned runs in the opener.

In the night cap, WPI junior Clare Doolin (9-2) allowed just two hits over six innings and picked up the win. She allowed three earned runs, walked three and fanned seven.

WPI scored single runs in the second and third and two in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.

In the second, sophomore Lindsay Gurska had an RBI single and in the third, the Engineers added an unearned run for a 2-0 lead.

Gurska would single and later score on a passed ball in the fourth before Murphy-Cook's RBI ground out pushed the lead to 4-0.

Coast Guard got right back in the game in the fifth as junior Morgan Kingston blasted a three-run homer off the left field foul pole to cut the deficit to 4-3.

WPI added two insurance runs in the seventh as Murphy-Cook roped an infield double off the third baseman, moved over on a bunt single and scored on a passed ball before an RBI single by Burnila pushed the lead to 6-3.

Freshman Kelsey Saucier pitched a perfect ninth to register her first career save.

Gurska was 3 for 3 in game two while Murphy-Cook and Burnila each added two hits in the win.

Kingston had both Coast Guard hits in the loss.

Sorensen (8-8) also went the distance in game two for the Bears allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four and not walking a batter.

The Bears are back in action on Friday at MIT in a NEWMAC doubleheader at 3:00, the first of three doubleheaders in three days for Coast Guard.
