Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith rallied from a 5-1 deficit for a 6-5 win in game two to complete a sweep and hamper Coast Guard's chances at earning a spot in next week's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament. Smith won the opener 7-0.
The Pioneers improve to 10-16 overall and 5-11 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 14-16 overall and 5-11 in conference play. The Bears must sweep Wellesley on Friday and get help to qualify for the tournament.
In the opener, Rowan Turner's two-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning and She fired a four-hit shutout while not walking a batter and striking out six to lead the Pioneers to the win.
Ally Snyder homered in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth in the game won win for Smith.
Sophomore Cherokee Strickland had a double the only extra base hit for the Bears in the opener.
In game two, Coast Guard struck first on senior Erin Lisko's RBI single in the top of the first before Smith tied the game with a run in the home half.
Freshman Emma Hvozdovich's two-run homer in the fourth highlighted a four run inning as the Bears took a 5-1 lead. Senior Jessie Richardson and junior Morgan Kingston added RBI singles in the inning for Coast Guard.
Smith got a run the fifth to make the score 5-2 and then took the lead with four runs in the sixth as Ally Snyder blasted a two-out, three-run homer to give the Pioneers a 6-5 lead.
Natalie Burchat (4-1) fired 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win while Coast Guard junior Sarah Sorensen (13-15) took the loss in relief.
Richardson and Strickland each had two hits in game two for the Bears.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday when the Bears host Eastern Connecticut in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
