Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Coast Guard split a pair of games at the National Training Center Tournament as the Bears beat Bates 4-3 before losing Fitchburg State 4-2.
In game one, Sara Cammuso's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Cherokee Strickland who walked to lead off the inning.
Cammuso's hit broke a 3-3 tie and Sarah Sorensen finished it off with a perfect frame in the top of the seventh to register the win.
Coast Guard struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first as Cherokee stroked a two-run single to left scoring Morgan Kingston and Erin Lisko who led off the inning with a double and a single respectively.
Bates scored a run each in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th inning.
Jessie Richardson's RBI single scored Kingston, who reached on a double in the bottom of the 5th.
In the opener, the Bears trailed 4-0 going into the seventh before Kingston's two-run double cut the deficit in half, but the rally fell short.
"I was very pleased with the total team effort in the game against Bates, but we got off to a slow start against Fitchburg and just dug too deep of a hole falling behind by four runs," said Coast Guard head coach Donna Koczajowski. "As we head into our conference games we need to carry momentum across both games a doubleheader."
Coast Guard is now 5-3 with a pair of games left on the southern swing. They play Gordon at 9 a.m. and Washington & Jefferson at 11 a.m. on Saturday to close out the trip.
