Bears Sweep the Day

NEWTON, Mass. – Coast Guard earned two victories, beating both Lasell and Suffolk in straight sets in nonconference action.

Coast Guard 3 Lasell 0 (25-5, 25-22, 25-21)

Junior Susan West led the Bears hitting .286, with 12 kills, and 17 digs. Senior Ashley Dumont hit a team high .368 with ten kills. Senior Maggie Hine had a game high 35 assists and 12 digs.

Lasell was led by freshman Olivia Addington who had a team high five kills while hitting .042. Sophomore Caitlyn Garcia had 16 digs for the Lasers.

It was a dominating first set for Coast Guard as they took and early 10-1 lead and never looked back crushing Lasell in the first set, 25-5.

The Lasers woke up in the second set running out to a 9-3 lead behind two kills from Addington.

Coast Guard responded with a 7-3 run making the score 12-10. West had two kills over this stretch while Dumont added one.

Lasell pushed the lead back to five twice more at 15-10 and 19-14 before the Bears took control of the second set. Coast Guard finished out the set on an 11-3 run to take it 25-22.

In the final set the Lasers once again took an early lead at 4-3 on a kill by senior Heather Longley. The Bears answered back with a 5-1 run taking an 8-5 lead.

Coast Guard never looked back from this point on taking the final set 25-21 to complete the sweep.

Coast Guard 3 Suffolk 0 (25-9, 25-15, 25,14)

Senior Ashlee Dumont hit a season high .789 with a match high 15 kills. Sophomore Michelle Hernandez had a game high 15 assists while junior Susan West had 14 digs. Sophomore Michelle McGill had 12 digs of her own.

Suffolk was led by sophomore Jane Buckley who had four kills and classmate Heidy Barreiro had a team high nine digs.

The Bears did not trail at any point in the first match as they ran out to a 4-0 lead on their way to a 25-9 first set win.

The Rams got their first lead in the second set at 1-0 but that's the only lead they would have as Coast Guard went on a 12-4 run taking a 12-5 lead on their way to a 25-15 win.

Once again it was Suffolk early on as they took a 6-3 lead in the third set. The Bears scored eight straight points after this stretch to take an 11-6 lead.

Coast Guard pushed it to their biggest lead at 19-9 and finished off the Rams with a final score 25-14, ending the day with their second 3-0 win.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, October 20th when they host Emerson in NEWMAC action. Match begins at 7:00.
