Netusil Goal Lifts Bears Past WPI in OT

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Terry Netusil scored the game winner off a rebound 6:55 into overtime leading Coast Guard to a 2-1 win over WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard improves to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play while WPI, which played its fifth overtime game in its last six outings, drops to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Bears beat WPI for the third straight season.

The seven wins in a season is tied for the second most in program history as both the 2001 and 2003 teams won seven games. The single-season school record for wins is eight set by the 2002 team which finished 8-8-1.

"We stepped on the field with a strong desire to play well and get a win tonight after a heartbreaking loss to Smith on Saturday," said Coast Guard head coach Susan Grant. "I was pleased with our hard work possessing and coming together along with our relentless effort which led to both of our goals tonight."

Junior Sarah Hills scored in the 32nd minute to give Coast Guard a 1-0 lead with junior Hanna Jansson assisting.

WPI tied the game early in the second half as Emma Turton found the back of the net just 1:24 into the second half to tie the game 1-1 where it would stand until the game winner as Neutsil finished the rebound after a missed shot by Hills, who is credited with the assist.

The Engineers outshot the Bears 18-8, but Coast Guard senior Holly Moore tied a season-high with ten saves including three outstanding stops in the first half to improve to 7-4-1. Abby Teliska had four saves in the loss for WPI.

Coast Guard, which is 5-2 on the road this season, will now play four of its next five games at home. The Bears, who have already eclipsed their win total from last season when the team finished 6-11-2 overall, are back in action on Saturday when they host first place Babson at noon.
